More confidence and enjoyment for you and your horse
This book is about how to be a better coach for yourself and your horse, so you can learn how to bring out the best in both of you.
People invest huge amounts of money, time and effort in their horses because they know that riding and horsemanship can bring great rewards. But knowing this makes it all the more disappointing when things don't go according to plan. Many riders are trying to deal with problems such as losing confidence, not getting on with their horses, feeling unsure of how to progress and having difficulty identifying or achieving their aims. They may find traditional competitive approaches unsuitable, and be unable to find a riding instructor who resonates with their values and addresses their needs. Such riders may find themselves feeling increasingly unsupported, isolated and discouraged.
Heart to Heart with Your Horse will help you to learn more about yourself and what's important to you about riding and being with horses. It offers coaching tips, practical exercises, information and ideas that will enable you to improve your relationship with your horse, enjoy yourself more, gain more confidence and find the encouragement and support you need to help you to make progress.
"I've just finished reading your book, and I had to write to say how much I enjoyed it. Having had horses for many years as a child, a lot of what you said really resonated with me – if only I'd had this book then, I would have been able to deepen my appreciation of the wonderful friendships my sister and I enjoyed with Fleur and Ginger. Interestingly, our favourite part of the day was after we'd hacked out on the lanes of North Devon, we'd un-tack them and ride them bareback with just a halter back across the fields, letting the horses stop and graze and just chatting and hanging around, and all four of us loved that bit best – never a cross word, a bolt or a shy – just relaxed enjoyment of each other's company.
Your book is beautifully written, poignant and full of absolutely wonderful tips to have a better relationship with your horse. It really is wise and insightful. I loved it and hope it sells really well."Lorna Howarth
The horse world tends to be rather conservative and slow to take to modern developments. Coaching, as opposed to technical instruction, has yet to filter through to many mainstream instructors and riding clubs. However, sports performance coaching and also confidence coaching are now appearing in some of the magazines and on many websites. Thankfully, there are books appearing about changing views of how humans can relate to horses, for example Linda Kohanov's very popular books The Tao of Equus and Riding Between the Worlds, and new attitudes towards horse training, for example Imke Spilke's Empowered Horses. I would like Heart to Heart with Your Horse to get out there as widely as possible in order to encourage people to think about what they are doing with their horses, to challenge some widely accepted norms, and to support people who want to explore doing things differently.
